Holland MI Dentists

Small daily habits, like brushing and flossing your teeth, can save you thousands of dollars in the long run. They can also significantly reduce your risk of experiencing a dental emergency and needing restorative care. For this reason, we always recommend that patients see our dentists in Holland, MI, for their routine teeth cleanings and exams at least every six months. These appointments, plus home care, can greatly improve the health of your smile.

In the meantime, here’s what you need to know about preventing cavities.

Maintain Good Dental Hygiene

Brushing and flossing are the cornerstones of cavity prevention. Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, ensuring you reach all surfaces of your teeth, including the back molars where cavities often form. Floss daily to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth, as these areas are prone to decay.

Eat a Healthy, Balanced Diet

What you eat plays a significant role in your oral health. Limit sugary and acidic foods and beverages, as they can contribute to the development of cavities. Instead, focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and dairy products. Foods high in calcium, like cheese and yogurt, help strengthen tooth enamel and protect against decay.

Use Fluoride Toothpaste & Rinse

Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens tooth enamel and helps prevent cavities. Make sure to use fluoride toothpaste and consider using a fluoride mouthwash for added protection. In some cases, our dentists in Holland, MI, may recommend professional fluoride treatments to provide an extra layer of defense.

Stay Hydrated by Drinking Water

Water is not only essential for your overall health but also beneficial for your teeth. Drinking water helps rinse away food particles and bacteria that can lead to cavities. If your local water supply is fluoridated, it can provide additional protection for your teeth.

Avoid Snacking

Frequent snacking can increase the risk of cavities, especially if the snacks are sugary or starchy. Each time you eat, bacteria in your mouth produce acids that attack your tooth enamel. By limiting snacking, you give your saliva a chance to neutralize acids and safeguard your teeth naturally.

Don’t Skip Routine Checkups

Regular dental checkups are essential for preventing cavities. Professional teeth cleanings remove plaque and tartar buildup that brushing and flossing can’t reach. Additionally, routine exams allow us to catch early signs of cavities before they become more severe. In general, our dentists in Holland, MI, recommend visiting us every six months to keep your teeth in excellent shape.

Consider Sealants for Teeth

Dental sealants are a great option for cavity prevention, especially for children and teens. These thin, protective coatings are applied to the chewing surfaces of molars, where cavities are most likely to develop. Sealants create a barrier that keeps food and bacteria out of hard-to-reach grooves.

COVID-19 UPDATE FROM DR. HABECKER AND HIS TEAM

Dear Patient Family,

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a difficult time for all of us. Many of you have been forced to wait for dental care and we appreciate your understanding while we kept our office closed to follow orders from the Governor's Office.

We are happy to say that we are opening our office for all patient treatment on June 1st, 2020. Our hours of operation will go back to normal, Monday-Thursday 8am - 5pm. We want you to know that there will be some changes at your next appointment. Please be patient with us as our protocols will inevitably change as new guidelines are released.

  • We ask that you use our parking lot as the waiting room.
  • Please wear a mask when you come into the office and leave it on until entering the treatment room. Homemade is acceptable.
  • Only the person receiving treatment should come in the building, all others will be asked to wait in the car if at all possible. The exception will be for our minor patients who may have one parent accompany them.
  • We will be asking you some questions when you arrive at the office and we will also be taking your temperature.
  • We will not be able to offer magazines, drinks, or toys at this time as they cannot be disinfected to our standards. Eventually this will change and we will be happy to offer our amenities once again.

These changes have been made to adhere to the latest CDC guidelines and for the benefit of our patients and our staff. We want you to know that our office has always taken the safety of our patients very seriously and that we will continue to follow the highest levels of sterilization and disinfection to keep you protected. If you would like more information on what measures we have taken we would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.

We cannot say how excited we are to see all of our patients again and to provide for their dental needs. We look forward to seeing all of your smiling faces soon!
